Our Story
A Shared Vision
Protea Development was founded in 1996 by Jeffrey Essakow and Yehudi “Gaf” Gaffen, two South African immigrants sharing a strong entrepreneurial work ethic and a steadfast belief in what real estate development could and should be. Our name honors the Protea, the South African national flower named after the Greek sea deity Proteus—a figure known for foretelling the future and adapting their form to meet the needs of their circumstances.
From the outset, our vision was to build an agile, entrepreneurial company capable of recognizing opportunity and acting decisively. We set out to develop and own real estate that delivers sound financial results while making a meaningful, positive contribution to the communities we serve. We are driven to create projects we are proud of, celebrated not just for their economic success, but for the enduring value they bring to the people and places around them.

For over three decades, Protea has embraced challenges that matter. From developing an essential VA healthcare facility and creating much-needed affordable housing, to playing a vital role in the transformational redevelopment of San Diego’s waterfront, we are drawn to projects that are complex, consequential, and capable of making a lasting difference.

Following Gaf’s recent sale of Gafcon, Jeff and Yehudi have reunited full-time to cement our foundation and look toward the horizon. As we step into our next chapter, our goal remains true to where we began: to be entrepreneurial, create lasting value, and strengthen communities. Yet, our vision continues to evolve. We are actively shaping a future where sustainable growth, innovative design, and community well-being intersect, ensuring the projects we develop today become the cherished landmarks of tomorrow.
