In 2017, a group including Protea principals Yehudi Gaffen and Jeffrey Essakow, along with fellow San Diegan Jeff Jacobs, was selected by the San DIego Unified Port District to enter into an Exclusive Negotiating Agreement for the future redevelopment of 35 acres of downtown San Diego waterfront. Envisioned to transform the downtown waterfront, the proposed hospitality and entertainment district is currently undergoing environmental review.
As proposed, the development would include up to 1,900 hotel rooms, an Event Center, an Aquarium, an Observation Tower, a Learning Center, restaurant and retail experiences, along with over 16 acres of parks and open space, including an urban beach and living shoreline.
